The Biblical Case for Excellence in Business
SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER
Mediocrity dishonors God.
There. I said it.
As Christian business owners, we are called to something higher than good enough.
Whatever You Do, Work as Unto the Lord
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters - Colossians 3:23
Your business represents Christ to the world. Every customer interaction. Every service call. Every email reply.
Sloppy work? That is your witness.
Excellent work? That is worship.
What Excellence Looks Like
Excellence is not perfectionism. It is faithfulness in the details:
Returning phone calls promptly - Even if you cannot help them, call back. Respect their time.
Showing up on time - Your word matters. If you say 10 AM, be there at 10 AM.
Delivering what you promise - Under-promise, over-deliver. Not the other way around.
Going the extra mile - Small gestures. Clean up your work area. Follow up after the job. Care.
Excellence is not about being the best. It is about being faithful.
The Excuse of Good Enough
We tell ourselves: It is good enough. They will not notice. I am too busy for perfection.
But good enough is often just lazy.
God does not call us to perfection. But He does call us to excellence.
The difference?
Perfectionism is fear-driven. Excellence is love-driven.
Perfectionism says: I must be flawless or I am worthless.
Excellence says: I will give my best because God deserves my best.
Excellence Attracts Opportunity
Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings - Proverbs 22:29
Your reputation is your ministry.
People notice excellence. They talk about it. They refer you. They trust you.
And when they ask: Why do you care so much? You get to say: Because I work for the Lord.
One Thing to Improve This Week
Pick ONE area of your business and raise the standard:
• Response time to emails? • Quality of your invoices? • Cleanliness of your truck? • Professionalism of your voicemail?
Start there. Make it excellent. Then move to the next thing.
Excellence is not a one-time event. It is a daily decision.
In His Service,
⚓ Shawn Miller
